Abstract

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) provide short- to intermediate-term intravenous access. As an alternative to centrally placed catheters, they represent a safe and cost-effective method of central venous access. The following article describes the currently available catheter types, indications for placement of PICCs, radiological insertion techniques, and potential complications associated with PICC placement.
